For the Love of Birds

For the Love of Birds

I’m truly amazed to reflect and realize that since we had a seed feeder out for the winter months to help out the local bird life, these birds, from House Finches, Song Sparrows, Chickadees, and Dark Eyed Juncos, have remained in our green space beyond our patio, now raising young.

I hear so much more bird song all throughout the day as they stay close to the nest, even hearing their babies grow up, especially at feeding time. Even our resident hummingbirds have accepted these birds, allowing the sharing of the patio space to visit at the same time (the male hummers would chase the birds away sometimes!)

This one winter feeder has formed a little community , in turn adding more life (nutrients, seed spreading, flower pollination), today large butterflies have been dancing through the flowering tree tops here even, never seen before. Though our seed feeder is removed once spring comes, as they can source their own food from nature with ease, they still visit our balcony often, a familiar safe haven to hang out at, look for spiders and small bugs to eat, look through my planters for nesting materials, and perch on the railing to sing.

My heart feels so full from having realised this, as they create a symphony of nature sounds, above the traffic noise we hear all the time. So lovely.  Both my boyfriend and I will miss them as we begin our packing to move to a new home. We’ll be leaving a note for the future residents of our unit, to let them know of these lovely feathered neighbours, and how they could support them in our absence.

Remember to reach out to nature, treat them with respect and love, and you shall receive so much more in return.

My Flower Mystery Solved!

My Flower Mystery Solved!

White Bachelor’s Buttons ‘Flore Pleno’ – © Kaishin Chu / Onelushlife Photography

Serendipitous discovery this weekend at my favourite local botanical garden, I discovered the name and type of plant of the flower I fell in love with and took a photo of while staying at this tiny little inn in Iceland 4.5 years ago. Such a happy find! AND, to know that I can grow this here, double joy!
White Bachelor’s Buttons ‘Flore Pleno’, Fair Maids of France, Fair Maids of Kent; Ranunculus Aconitifolius
The inn owner had thought it was a sorrel flower/plant, but I knew it couldn’t be, based on the leaf shape. Mystery now solved 🙂 It’s actually a type of buttercup/crowsfoot, and from the Ranunculaceae Family/Ranunculus genus, I would have never guessed, but now it makes total sense! I love cuttings of popular varieties of Ranunculus or Persian Buttercups, or even the simple wildflower Buttercup – which I didn’t know belonged to the Ranunculus family as well.

Chasing Chickens

Chasing Chickens

I assisted my father as a chicken farmer up until I graduated from college, I started at the 4 or 5 helping out, raising chickens from egg and down to helping to prep them as food. I learned at an early age to understand and appreciate the food we grew and raised, raising them with care and admiration.

My favorite thing was visiting the hens early in the morning and after they laid their eggs, I loved their relaxed chatter. To this day that sound still makes me smile and is a comfort to hear. If only I could share an audio file.

Picture here was taken by me at age 16, my first family of two kinds of chicken I helped to hatch and hand raise.

It’s good to remember where we come from, and how we’ve grown up  I can also see that photography has grown to be a passion of mine, to share imagery and stories.

Red Foxes of San Juan Island – Part 2

Red Foxes of San Juan Island – Part 2

Over this long weekend, new observations were made of the American Red Foxes I’ve been following over on San Juan Island.

1. They use multiple dens which were former Cottontail dens, enlarged for their use, and with a “porch” built for shading from the elements.
2. Bella is in fact the same as Mrs. Salty, due to the confirmation of the first point above. She has lost an incredible amounts of weight, due to feeding 7 kits! They are now mostly weened off of milk, some eating more solids then others. The smaller of the two runts (there are two), I’ve named it Smudge, still looks for milk with her, and the two have a closer special bond. I’ve witnessed her scavenging a piece of apple that some tourist dumped (illegally feeding) by the look out point, she brought it back to Smudge to gnaw on, which he/she has yet to figure out biting off a piece of the apple.

Last Moments with Lady

Last Moments with Lady

An adorable schnauzer with a gentle soul, Lady, needed to go beyond the rainbow bridge in the coming week or two. Her momma wanted to celebrate the life of L, her best friend and fur baby, to reinforce their memorable friendship and love. Lady crossed the rainbow bridge peacefully in her BFF’s arms two weeks later… here are the loving moments they shared with me on a beautiful late afternoon. Continue reading “Last Moments with Lady”

If you’re a fan of road tripping on open roads and vast landscapes, Iceland is one amazing country to travel through. Space to think, to absorb nature in all its beauty and harshness. This #solotraveller trip was one of the most spectacular and soul shifting.
