Mývatn is a lake named for the Midges (flying insect) that breed excessively in this thermal area. Midge lake is the translation. The lake itself is centred in a lava field, with all sorts of lava columns cracking out of the landscape. It reminds me of a giant baked brownie or bread loaf, with the peaked crack tops. As for the midges, luckily they are the non-biting ones! The air in the eve around 7-8p start becoming thick with them, and the makes swarm to mate, they like to stick to you, heat and dark colour seeking.
